City of Reno receives grant from Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation for Renown Alumni Recreation Therapy Program

The City of Reno is proud to announce that it has been awarded $24,899 as part of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation National Paralysis Resource Center (NPRC) 2022 1st Cycle Direct Effect Quality of Life grants.

Fifty-seven grants totaling $1,216,425 were awarded. The Quality of Life Grants Program supports nonprofit organizations that empower individuals living with paralysis.

Since the Quality of Life Grants Program’s inception, more than 3,550 grants totaling more than $37 million have been awarded. Funding for this program was made possible through a cooperative agreement with the Administration for Community Living (ACL grant #90PRRC0006-01-00).

The Reeve Foundation’s National Paralysis Resource Center has several grants under the Quality of Life program awarding grants in different category areas, varying in different amounts.

The Direct Effect Quality of Life grants program funds organizations up to $25,000 to support a wide range of projects and activities that will impact individuals living with paralysis and their families.

“Today our President & CEO Maggie Goldberg said to me, ‘I can’t help but think what Dana Reeve would be thinking if she saw that we have awarded over $37 million…it’s truly remarkable,” said Mark Bogosian, Director, Quality of Life Grants Program, Reeve Foundation. “I echo her thought and am incredibly thankful to be a part of this amazing grants program that continues to grow, improve, and impact literally millions of people.”

The City of Reno will use the grant to continue to offer the piloted Renown Alumni Recreation Therapy Program. Activities are scheduled quarterly (this request is for June 1, 2022 – May 31, 2023 activities) to Renown alumni. Eligible alumni include anyone living with paralysis that have used the Renown system from wound care, to rehab, to outpatient services.

The proposed continuation of the program provides an amazing opportunity for alumni to try activities that might be a challenge to do without the expertise and equipment provided by the City of Reno and Renown. The powerful impact of this program brings together alumni to create lasting friendships and peer relationships outside the hospital and medical setting.

“We would like to thank the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation Quality of Life Grants Program for providing funding to the City of Reno, which helps give greater independence to individuals living with paralysis,” said April Wolfe, Therapeutic Recreation Specialist at the City of Reno. “This grant will provide our community with services and education that will truly enhance all our lives.”

“The Renown Alumni Recreation Therapy program gives people who have experienced paralysis the opportunity to heal through recreation,” said Jared Worchel, DO, MS, Renown Rehabilitation Hospital physiatrist. “We’re so grateful for the Reeve Foundation’s support that will allow this program to continue instilling confidence and joy in Renown’s alumni.”
