The City of Reno and Ward 4 Councilmember Meghan Ebert have announced an upcoming free culinary class for Northern Nevada seniors. The event is scheduled for Thursday, July 25, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Reno Elks Lodge located at 597 Kumle Lane.

Chef Johnathan Chapin will lead the class, which aims to provide seniors with recipes for nutritious meals on a budget. The session will include affordable meal preparation, taste testing, and guidance on shopping for ingredients locally.

Councilmember Ebert expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative: "This is our sixth cooking class for seniors, and I am excited to see how successful each class has been,” she said. “Sometimes cooking can be expensive and we can all use some fresh ideas. That’s why we are continuing to empower seniors by hosting these fun, instructional classes. It’s been great watching our seniors learn how to cook tasty and budget-friendly meals while socializing and making friends.”

Chef Chapin is the Owner, Founder, and Chef at Reno Recipes. His culinary career began in his teenage years and advanced through roles as sous chef and chef de cuisine before he managed his own kitchens. He also owned a musical production company and venue but returned to cooking during the COVID-19 pandemic to support families, local nonprofits, and those facing food insecurity.

Due to limited space, advance registration is required for the class. Interested seniors can sign up online.
