The City of Reno will dedicate a new mural at Mira Loma Skate Park, created in partnership with CoLAB Mural Works—a program of the E.L. Cord Museum School and Communities in Schools. The media, public, and other stakeholders are invited to the dedication ceremony on August 6, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. near the Mira Loma Skate Park and restroom structure.
Artist Ray Valdez led a group of high school students from various local schools in designing and painting the mural. Throughout this process, the students were paid for their time and gained experience in creating a public art proposal, obtaining necessary approvals, and bringing the project to fruition.
CoLab Mural Works is in its third year, continuing to develop high school students’ creative skills while investing in the built environment of southeast Reno. The City of Reno is partnering with the program for the second time this year, providing $7,000 in funding to pay for the lead artist and preparation of the site for painting.
“This project is a win-win,” said Megan Berner, Arts & Culture Manager for the City of Reno. “Our youngest residents got to learn more about local government in a project that beautifies a park for all to enjoy. This dedication ceremony celebrates the creativity and hard work of young artists and the community’s commitment to public art.”
CoLAB Mural Works is administered by the E.L. Cord Museum School, which is managed by E.L. Museum School Program Director Eddie Guth, in partnership with Nevada Museum of Art.
“Our mission is to foster creativity, self-expression, and community engagement among teens while promoting diversity, inclusivity and social awareness,” said Guth. “By empowering teens to use their artistic talents to beautify and uplift public spaces, we hope to inspire a sense of pride and ownership in their communities as well as encourage others to appreciate and celebrate the unique perspectives and experiences of young people.”
The Nevada Museum of Art and enCompass Academy, The City of Reno, and Communities in Schools participated in this project. Further support was provided by Reno Paint Mart, who donated half of the program’s supplies, and Truckee River Paint Company who assisted with preparing the site. The Reno Arts & Culture Commission and Public Art Committee funded a portion of the project covering artist fees and site preparation.
