There's a new addition to the Blue Angel statue in downtown Las Vegas commemorating the history behind a staple statute in the city designed by the same local artist behind the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign.
The iconic Blue Angle statue now has a plaque located at it's base which details the artwork's elaborate history and how it stood guard over the Blue Angel Motel on top of a revolving 32-foot pole for nearly six decades.
"Today @cityoflasvegas officially installed a plaque marking the historic nature of the Blue Angel sculpture," Mayor Carolyn Goodman wrote in a Jan. 18 tweet. "The 15-foot iconic statue dates back to 1957 and The Blue Angel Motel, and is now watching over the intersection of Eastern, Charleston and Fremont."
Goodman unveiled the plaque on social media where she also recognized the City of Las Vegas for installing it, according to KSNV.
The statue was originally situated by the motel on Fremont Street and stayed there two years after the Blue Angel Motel was demolished in 2015, KSNV reported. It was then restored to it's original appearance.
The plaque stated that the Blue Angel was designed by Betty Willis who passed away the same year the Blue Angel Motel was torn down.
