McKinley Arts & Culture Center to host two new exhibitions “Calm Spaces,” “Head Case,” & “Morte” and “Diverse Dragons Developing Connection, Community & Collaboration Through the Arts”

The City of Reno McKinley Arts & Culture Center to host two new exhibitions, “Calm Spaces,” “Head Case,” & “Morte” and “Diverse Dragons Developing Connection, Community & Collaboration Through the Arts”, at the  McKinley Gallery West Art Exhibition and McKinley Gallery East Art Exhibition, respectively. The public and media are invited to attend the artist reception Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. 

McKinley Gallery West Art Exhibition: The exhibitions, “Calm Spaces” by Julianna Horvath, “Head Case” by Ryan Hartman, and “Morte” by Maggie Pollock will run December 19, 2022 to February 10, 2023 featuring works from students in the 2022 Portfolio Emphasis Class at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC).

The Portfolio Emphasis class is the capstone class to a fine arts degree at TMCC, where students learn to create a body of work and host a professional art exhibition from start to finish. The “Calm Spaces” exhibition looks to evoke feelings of calmness, rest, and relaxation through collage and painting. “Head Case” is a collection of sculptures that focuses on showing mental disorders through anthropomorphized and abstract characters. The “Morte” series meant to provoke conversations about loss and grief using oil paint on canvas.

McKinley Gallery East Art Exhibition: The “Diverse Dragons Developing Connection, Community & Collaboration Through the Arts” exhibition will run December 19, 2022 to February 10, 2023 featuring works from Doral Academy of Northern Nevada. 

Doral Academy of Northern Nevada is a tuition-free public charter school with a focus on rigorous academics and arts integration. With over 950 students in grades K-8 from 23 different zip codes and four different counties, their focus is on building community and working together to learn and grow. The Doral Dragons will be exhibiting collaborative works of art with over 40 pieces created by nearly 800 students. Their exhibit, “Diverse Dragons Developing Connection, Community & Collaboration Through the Arts” will highlight a focus on teamwork and contributing an individual’s talents towards a common goal.
