The University of Nevada, Reno College of Engineering will offer a lab program to students grades 6-to-12.
The Engineering Programs Inspiring the Community (EPIC) lab will provide hands-on engineering experience during a free, two-hour science workshop, according to a news release shared by the university.
“We know from studies that academic interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) starts to wane in middle school,” said Samantha Bickert, K-12 outreach coordinator for the College of Engineering, in the release. “Many middle and high school students view STEM as uninteresting and they don’t know how to apply the knowledge to real life.”
The EPIC lab is at the William Pennington Engineering Building on Feb. 11, March 11 and April 15 with registration scheduled Jan. 23.
The lab will seek to teach students about the wide array of engineering jobs available in the industry as the U.S. seeks to keep its position as the leader of science and technology activities, according to a National Science Foundation report.
“This aligns with one of the College of Engineering’s overall focuses, preparing the engineers of the future,” the news release states.
Those interested in registering for EPIC lab can contact Bickert at sbickert@unr.edu to do so.
