Reproductive rights were on the mind of a University of Nevada, Reno student who visited the White House to discuss the issue.

First-year student Asma Baloch joined 74 other student-leaders from universities across the country to travel to Washington, D.C., a UNR news release said this week.

“I got an email around August saying that I was nominated by a member of the student government, and it said that I had an opportunity to go to the White House,” Baloch said in the release. “It said to just send a biography and the reason why I think I would be good for this role.”

The itinerary included a reproductive rights meeting called by Vice President Kamala Harris at the American Council of Education, along with funding from The Multicultural Center and the Associated Students of the University of Nevada's Diversity and Inclusion Department.

Baloch was chosen due to her membership chair position with the Planned Parenthood Club that she submitted in her application. The goal of the club is the backing of reproductive rights, which Baloch is aligned with.

Baloch said it was an eye-opening experience to attend the event that further cemented her commitment to reproductive rights. Upon her return to Nevada, she communicated with the head of the university's Planned Parenthood Club to create a dialogue on how to be more engaging about the topic in the Reno-Sparks area.
