The dean of the University of Nevada, Reno’s (UNR) College of Engineering is known for his track record of working with Tesla on student internships and jobs.
College of Engineering Dean Erick Jones was on hand for the unveiling of the new Tesla Semi at the Gigafactory in Sparks on Dec. 1, a recent UNR news release said.
“I had the opportunity last night to watch one of the greatest engineers of our time roll out an EV tractor trailer that will improve global sustainability, support equitable community infrastructure and possibly improve the driver shortage through the ‘cool’ factor,” Jones said.
The vehicle is an entirely electric Class 8 commercial semi that can reportedly haul up to 82,000 pounds and travel up to 500 miles on a single charge.
“I believe this feat will challenge all engineers and the next generation of engineers to think about design that is innovative, exciting and sustainable,” Jones wrote in a social media post.
The dean also had praise for Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who was admitted to the National Academy of Engineering in February.
The vehicle showcased at the event was the first delivery of the Tesla Semi to client Pepsi.
The latest opportunity for engineering students to engage with Gigafactory engineering and hiring teams was the Tesla Demo Day on Nov. 17.
