A University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) dean has been selected to a panel by members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Donald Easton-Brooks, dean of the College of Education and Human Development, was chosen in order to aid the National Center for Educational Statistics come up with methods to help educational professionals traverse the nation’s educational systems; a recent news release from the university said.

“I am excited to be a contributor to this great work using data and statistics to move our communities forward,” Easton-Brooks said in the release.

The endeavor yielded the consensus study report "A Vision and Roadmap for Education Statistics" with the help of other researchers from the country’s top research universities.

Easton-Brooks was chosen for the panel because he is a critical quantitative researcher with more than 125 publications and speeches to his credit, the release said. He is an expert on how systems, policies and practices impact academic performance as well as how students from underrepresented communities become successful.

As the country’s student population continues to become more diverse, more research regarding students' experiences is needed; the release said. In order to incorporate evidence-based practices in their classrooms, educators at all levels are now placing a strong emphasis on diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. The Institute of Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education tapped the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to provide insight for the National Center for Education Statistics, the nation's leading education-based statistical organization.
