The new engineering dean at the University of Nevada, Reno, laid out his vision in a recent State of the College address.
Among the initiatives that College of Engineering Dean Erick Jones is promoting is to define the school’s role in education, research and outreach for the lithium industry in the Truckee Meadows, according to Nevada Today. Lithium is a major component found in rechargeable batteries for electric cars and mobile phones, along with other items.
“I truly believe that we can drive the next generation’s ‘lithium valley’ in the state of Nevada through our College of Engineering,” Jones told Nevada Today.
He is hoping to be an advocate for the critically mined material in an effort to capitalize on the area’s lithium reserves, as well as companies in the state that require it, such as Tesla and Panasonic.
“It is important to recognize that as we contribute to the professions and industries of our state, that there are environmental impacts of mining to the landscape and water resources that always must be considered as we develop partnerships with industry partners,” Jones said, according to Nevada Today. “This is especially important when we look at history and realize there are environmental challenges and impacts to native land. Every tribe is different and has different interests. We must consider these interests individually and listen carefully to what these interests are and how they relate to the future of mining in our state.”
The college's Chemical & Materials Engineering Department already offers a minor in batteries and energy storage technologies, which is regarded as one of the first in the country. Jones noted that lithium is the natural next step in the college's programs and research portfolio. With that addition, the school will be at the forefront of training future engineers who will meet the needs of the rapidly growing industry.
