The University of Nevada, Reno’s DEER program director has received the Mensa’s Laura Joyner Award.
Jennifer Carson, Ph.D., director of the DEER Program (Dementia Engagement, Education and Research) has received the award for her contributions to the safeguarding of human intelligence, according to a news release from the university.
“While the DEER Program promotes practical lifestyle strategies to protect brain health, our work also encourages people to value all of the qualities and expressions that make us human,” Carson said in the release.
As an acute gerontologist, Carson has led efforts that have garnered her awards for dementia education curriculum. The objective of the DEER program, which inaugurated the School of Public Health in 2018, seeks to enhance the wellbeing of individuals with dementia.
“It is an honor that I share with my colleagues and partners, including people living with dementia who have contributed greatly to this shared work," Carson said. "The DEER program’s core value of participation opens a world of possibilities.”
The program gets its inspiration from joint research with organizations such as the Dementia Friendly Nevada initiative.
“This is a huge accomplishment and a well-deserved award for Dr. Carson and the DEER Program," Dean Muge Akpinar-Elci of the School of Public Health said. "I’m so proud of their accomplishments, which continue to educate and provide resources for our community impacted by dementia.”
