A University of Nevada, Reno mechanical engineering professor has won a national award for a nuclear packaging program.
The school’s Mechanical Engineering Foundation professor Miles Greiner was given the 2022 W. Edwards Deming Outstanding Training Award during recent online ceremony on behalf of the Nuclear Packaging Graduate Program, according to a news release from the university.
“Nuclear packaging is not a well-known specialty, but a wide variety of advanced technologies rely on it,” Greiner said in the release.
The graduate program is a joint coalition from the university and the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management Packaging Certification Program. The program has been highlighted by Graduate School USA in the agile management area and in the human capital classification by the Airborne Electronic Attack Systems Program Office of the Navy.
Established by the Department of Agriculture in 1921, the Graduate School USA offers professional development and curriculum for the federal government and the commercial sector. The 2022 W. Edwards Deming Outstanding Training Award is given to municipal or federal entities that have shown merit in improving quality processes within that organization.
Additionally, nuclear packaging is utilized to help keep a region safe when radioactive materials are being stockpiled, transported and eliminated. The material was vital to produce carbon-free nuclear power, defense, medical diagnosis and treatment, along with breakthrough science applications.
