A new position has been established by the University of Nevada, Reno Extension to promote the wellbeing of people in southern Nevada.

Elika Nematian will work with fellow extension specialists in providing health and nutrition education as the Clark County Extension educator, according to a news release provided by the school.

“We are looking at innovative ways to best share our resources and expertise with the community and stakeholders in Clark County,” Nematian said in the release. “When providing resources, we really want to take a systems approach to improve the health of communities we’re working in.”

Part of the job involves tailoring specific programs for neighborhoods in the community by utilizing zip codes and finding backing for numerous initiatives. One of those programs is the Healthy Kids Festival, which had its tenth anniversary in September. The festival showcased advocacy on behalf of the organization that provided tips on physical fitness, along with nutritional advice.

During her career, she had spearheaded efforts to change state laws that would facilitate food education at both the local and national levels.

Nematian had previously worked with Extension in Clark County for six years and is happy to be returning to lead the proposed efforts, which she did as a community-based instructor on nutrition education programs.
