A $6.7 million federal grant will help back interested first-generation college students at the University of Nevada, Reno with rigorous college preparatory services.
The Student Services' First-Generation Student Center will receive three Upward Bound (UB) Classic Program grants and one Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) Program grant by the U.S. Department of Education, a recent news release from the university said.
“This funding means direct support to local high students in Washoe and Lyon counties through the provision of free, top-notch college preparation services,” Ellen Houston, executive director of the First Generation Student Center, said in the release.
Moreover, the UB/UBMS programs offer their facilities for the students to grow beyond their usual circumstances as they gear up for college, along with advice on how to succeed in college.
The program provides financial literacy, professional development, internships, STEM information and a tour of the university to help enable students to feel they can overcome any obstacles they encounter in college.
“The UB/UBMS team works hard to inspire and assist young people in pursuing their dreams of higher education,” Houston said. “We are excited to have our funding renewed and continue to work with students at our eight federally identified target high schools.”
