A graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno’s Reynolds School of Journalism recently reflected back at her tenure at the school, which led to her landing a job with Bloomberg News.

Taylor Johnson, who worked as a staff writer for the school’s newspaper, Nevada Sagebrush, when she started school as a means to hone her writing skills, traveled to New York City to work for Bloomberg News as a reporter, according to a recent news release shared by the university.

“I was in Chicago when I was told Bloomberg wanted me to join them for the summer,” Johnson said in the release. “As soon as I put the phone down, I was bouncing up and down like a madman.”

According to the release, she said that joining the school publication helped her find what she wanted to do with her life.

“Words have the power to identify and eventually heal wounds people don’t sometimes realize are there," she said. "That’s what I wanted my work to do, for people to understand what other people dealt with on-campus and for them to do something about it.”

It was a piece on white supremacy that promoted Johnson from staff writer to news editor, and she often turns to this Ida B. Wells quote when highlighting marginalized communities: “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.”

“The journalism school is a family that builds and supports you, they will build up your strengths and even assist you with your weaknesses," Johnson said. "Without their guidance and help, I don’t think I’d be walking around the streets of New York into the Bloomberg office every day.”
