A Foundation Professor Award was presented recently to a University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) professor.

Deborah Boehm is a professor of Anthropology and Gender, Race, and Identity at UNR’s College of Liberal Arts, according to a university news release

The annual award honors tenured professors who possess an outstanding academic record, national distinction in their field, and a track record of service to the university.

“I’m honored to receive this recognition, especially because it signals the ways the university values publicly engaged scholarship and research that goes beyond the academy,” Boehm said.

Boehm has been an instructor at UNR for over 15 years; her dedication to research and teaching has not wavered since she started her career there.

“She certainly has exceeded sustained achievement as outlined by the award requirements and undoubtedly will surpass the promise of continued excellence,” the news release noted.

“I’ve witnessed the power of collective action as people from across the country – people in detention and their loved ones, formerly detained people, immigrant advocates, lawyers, and others – come together to bring about change and to make their communities places that value and ensure liberation for all human beings,” Boehm said.

Boehm is currently on leave from the university to conduct research. As an Andrew Carnegie Fellow, she will study the U.S. immigration detention system against the backdrop of social calls to end immigration detention and incarceration, according to the news release.
