The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office family is mourning two of our own

1

Washoe County Sheriff's Office recently issued the following announcement.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office family is mourning two of our own.

It is with great sadness that we inform our community of the passing of Dispatcher Gary Herbeck and Retired Captain Dave Butko.

Gary passed away on January 1st after a valiant battle against stage 4 cancer. When he was diagnosed in March 2021, he was given 2-4 months to live. In true Gary fashion, he defied those odds and lived long enough to celebrate his 53rd wedding anniversary to his best friend and wife, spend time with his children and grandchildren and see his great-grandbaby’s first birthday. Gary worked with us for 19 years.

Dave passed away on January 2nd after battling medical challenges for several months. Dave started his career with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office in 1978 and served 29 years, retiring in 2007. During Dave’s career he worked in Detention, Patrol, the Consolidated Narcotics Unit, the Detective Division, Internal Affairs, and the Academy. Dave was lucky to be able to say goodbye to his two sons, and he was holding his beloved wife Karla’s hand when he passed.

Rest in peace Gary and Dave, our hearts are with both families and their loved ones during their time of mourning.
