Give Thanks, Give Food: November 1-December 31

Food

County of Washoe recently issued the following announcement.

This year, Washoe County Library System will once again partner with local food banks in an effort to combat hunger in our community. From November 1-December 31 patrons are invited to donate cans or boxes of non-perishable food products to Washoe County Library System locations.

Each year the library has delivered thousands of pounds of food to local food banks. In previous years the program was called Food for Fines. Now that Washoe County Library System is fine-free, our Give Thanks, Give Food program allows us to continue that partnership. Donations in the Reno-Sparks area will be delivered to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Donations at the Incline Village Library will go to Sierra Community House.

These food items are especially needed: canned meats, fish, and peanut butter; macaroni and cheese and pasta meals; powdered milk, baby formula, and baby food; complete meals in a can such as stew, chili, ravioli, and hearty soups; canned fruits, juice, and vegetables; dry cereal, oatmeal, rice, and pasta.

Food must be in store-sealed cans, boxes, or plastic containers within its expiration date. Glass containers, perishable food, or opened containers cannot be accepted.

In addition to our Give Thanks, Give Food program, Washoe County Library System is also partnering with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada to offer Kids Cafe meals. The Kids Cafe program provides free, nutritious meals to kids ages 2-18 while they are out of school. Meals will be available during winter break at the following locations:

Duncan/Traner Community Library: December 17, 20-22, and 27-29, from 3-3:30 p.m.

North Valleys Library: December 17, 20-23, and 27-30, from 11:30 a.m.-noon

Sierra View Library: December 17, 20-23, and 27-30, from 11:30 a.m.-noon
