The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) Foundation recently awarded a $2,500 scholarship to an engineering student.
According to a University of Nevada, Reno press release, the TMS Foundation awarded a $2,500 Structural Materials Division (SMD) Scholarship to chemical and materials engineering (CME) student Sydney Fields. By supporting student programs and scholarships, the TMS Foundation works to foster the future of the minerals, metals, and materials industries.
“I am incredibly honored to be a recipient of this award. I am thoroughly enjoying working in the materials science and engineering field, and it is inspiring to be selected as the recipient," Fields said, according to the press release. "I am very grateful for my mentor and lab mates who have encouraged me.”
Fields is mentored by CME Assistant Professor Yufeng Zheng and is a member of Zheng’s research group via the Nevada Undergraduate Research Award.
“Sydney is a model student in our materials science and engineering program and she has been excellent in her academics, research and service,” Zheng said, according to the press release. “Sydney’s work has represented the highest standard of our undergraduate students’ research.”
This isn't the first time Fields has received recognition for her hard work. She also previously received an award from the National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive research Research Infrastructure Improvement Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program for a proposal to investigate the effects of post-heat-treatment on the titanium alloys used in 3D printing for aerospace applications.
