The University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business will offer students the opportunity to learn marketing skills with client project-based courses.

Students are often given the opportunity to participate in these endeavors thanks to the efforts of associate professor of marketing Dr. Igor Makienko and assistant professor of marketing Dr. Jessica Rixom, according to a news release shared by the university.

“We consider client projects as an important means of synthesizing marketing knowledge from different areas,” Makienko said in the release. “I hope that such projects help to support (the) entrepreneurial ecosystem in Reno Sparks area.”

MBA program participants in Makienko's spring class helped develop Slieve Brewing Company’s latest marketing efforts, which is run by Philip Mountain.

Mountain decided to open up the brewery after winning several prizes in home-brewing competitions and asked the Nevada Small Business Development Center for help who in turn suggested they utilize Makienko's class.

According to Reed Parkhurst, a business student who worked on the Slieve Brewing Company project: “It was really nice to work with a start-up because it gave us more flexibility. We got to help build a business and develop an entire brand. I learned a lot about the creative aspects of running a business that will help me start my own business after I graduate.”
