The University of Nevada, Reno’s Reynolds School of Journalism will celebrate 100 years of journalism at the school on Oct. 26.
According to a news release shared by the university, journalism was first taught at the school in the fall of 1922 and the event will be held at the school’s Joe Crowley Student Union Milt Glick Ballrooms.
“Journalism education at Nevada has had a remarkable run during the past century,” Al Stavitsky, Dean of the Reynolds School of Journalism, said in the release. “I’m convinced the best days are ahead.”
The free event will feature a 30-minute documentary "On the Record: A Century of Journalism Education at Nevada,” a production by former faculty member and renown filmmaker Kari Barber and members of student body and staff.
The roots of the school’s journalism department can be traced back to local graduate and reporter, Laura Ambler, who initially taught the intricacies of journalism to 11 students.
The following year Professor Alfred “Higgy” Higginbotham arrived at the school and grew the journalism program until it eventually became its one department in 1943.
Since then, the department has produced several notable alumni who contributed to the industry throughout the nation. In 1984, the department was christened the Reynolds School of Journalism in honor of a significant donation by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.
