University of Nevada, Reno President Brian Sandoval has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a Sept. 15 release following a positive test result received that morning.

In a message to his “Wolf Pack family,” Sandoval thanked everyone for their hard work in helping keep the campus community safe and healthy during an already busy fall semester.

“With that said, I wish to inform you earlier today I learned that I have tested positive for COVID-19. My symptoms have been very mild and I am confident I will make a quick recovery,” Sandoval said in the release.

The university president will remain isolated in his home for 10 days following the result. Sandoval attended the university’s football game Sept. 11 and travelled to watch the Raiders in Las Vegas on Sept. 13, following a negative test result for COVID-19 on Sept. 9, KUNR reported.

While Sandoval was vaccinated against the virus earlier this spring, he stated in the release that his mild symptoms point to the fact that the vaccines are doing their job and used this moment to encourage students and staff to get vaccinated if they haven’t already done so.

Sandoval concluded his message, encouraging the campus community to continue to wear masks indoors, to practice social distancing and to wash their hands frequently to prevent further spread of the virus.
