Dr. James M. Alexander, obstetrics and gynecology chair at the University of Nevada, Reno's School of Medicine and Renown Health, was appointed as a leader for Nevada's first integrated health system.

Alexander will head the academic development, surgical and medical services, teaching courses, and research for the healthcare system, according to a news release from the university.

“The affiliation offers a remarkable opportunity to advance health and health care through medical education, clinical research and patient care for our community and our state,” Alexander said in the release. “By integrating our teaching, research and patient care, we can make a difference for women and children in Nevada and beyond.”

Alexander is among the first of numerous projected joint-chair hires for UNR Med and Renown.

“Shaping the future of healthcare in our state has never been more important than it is now," Dr. Rahul Mediwala, chief medical officer of health services at Renown Health, said. "I do not doubt that Dr. Alexander will apply his skills, enthusiasm, and guiding leadership to improve our community's health through increased access to care, innovative health care delivery, and expanding clinical research.”

In his new role, Alexander will try adding more physicians through medical education to the state’s workforce as that state has fewer health care providers per capita than the national average.

“Dr. Alexander is a dedicated obstetrician and gynecologist who takes great pride in his work as a researcher and mentor," Dr. Melissa Piasecki, UNR Med acting dean and Renown chief academic officer, said. "He has a deep commitment to improving women's health and fostering the careers of future physicians in this specialty. Our school of medicine and health system are very fortunate to have recruited Dr. Alexander and will benefit from the growth of clinical services, medical education, and clinical research in obstetrics and gynecology under his direction.”
