The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), Graduate Student Association (GSA) handed out approximately $70,000 in awards to graduate students this spring.

The scholarship money was given to students who were attending graduate school in recognition of their work in teaching, research, services and overall character, a recent news release from the university said.

“GSA Spring Awards is a way to recognize the hard work that our graduate students do," Roshika Roshika, cell and molecular biology Ph.D. graduate student, said in the release. “It’s a tradition that GSA has been doing for years to acknowledge the academic achievements and the non-academic achievements of a graduate student."

The mission of the GSA is to cultivate dynamic graduate students as they help make the university a Carnegie R-1 Institution, the release said.

"The GSA Spring Awards are an amazing resource for graduate students," Christina McSherry, Ph.D., spring 2022 anthropology graduate, said in the release. "The awards range from scholarships to research grants. During my time at UNR, I received several scholarships and awards as well as a grant to complete my fieldwork. The awards I received were instrumental in helping me complete my dissertation."

The GSA awards are only for graduate students, as the university said that it helps set a competition benchmark for those who excel in both school and the community.
