Mae Gustin, an accomplished professor of environmental geochemistry, won the University of Nevada's Excellence in Laboratory Safety Award.

According to a press release, Gustin, who teaches at the University of Nevada Reno College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources, received the Award for Excellence in Laboratory Safety at the 2022 Honor the Best celebration, which is now a part of the most important awards he has received from the University and the Nevada System of Higher Education.

The Honor the Best celebration upholds the most notable achievements of faculty, staff, and students.

“Dr. Gustin has demonstrated excellence in laboratory safety over many years," Luis Barthel-Rosa, the Chemical Management Services Manager of Environmental Health & Safety said on June 8. "She displays leadership for her research group’s safety program by ensuring that all members of her group are fully trained in safe lab practices and that training records are maintained.”

Gustin herself discussed her work as well.

“I have always run a tight ship, and carefully follow UNR safety protocols," Gustin said. "This is important for we have many toxic chemicals in my lab and clean with acids. I have had many students work for me and it is my job to guarantee their safety.”

Furthermore, the Laboratory Safety Excellence Award recognizes Mae Gustin's quality of leadership in the practice and development of laboratory safety protocols pertaining to various chemicals and acids.
