On Tuesday, March 15, at approximately 5:52 a.m., the Reno Fire Department (RFD) responded to a structure fire at 2411 Cannan Street. The fire was contained to the garage and attic space. An adult male and adult female were home at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported. The Red Cross responded and assisted in re-locating the occupants.
Fire investigators determined the fire started at the exterior wall from a running vehicle exhaust pipe that was in contact with combustibles. The fire quickly progressed to the interior of the garage.
“Upon noticing the fire, the occupants were smart to close the man door separating the garage and the living space," said Tray Palmer, RFD Fire Marshal. “This kept the fire from spreading into the living area and allowed firefighters to quickly extinguish the fire.”
RFD would like to remind you that the hot surfaces on the engine exhaust system of a running vehicle are hot enough to ignite combustibles. When running a vehicle, make sure your exhaust system is not in close contact with combustibles. This type of ignition is more common in vegetation fires when grass and brush are in direct contact with the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle.
