City of Reno issued the following announcement on November 17.
Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve has issued the following statement regarding the one-year anniversary of the Pinehaven Fire and 10-year anniversary of the Caughlin Fire:
As we reflect on the one-year anniversary of the Pinehaven Fire, I would like to take a moment to thank the men and women of the Reno Fire Department, the Reno Police Department and City staff who came together that day to protect our community. I also want to recognize the numerous regional partners who provided mutual aid, along with the media, who helped keep our community informed as first responders fought to keep our neighbors safe.
The Pinehaven Fire destroyed 5 structures and damaged 24 more. Tragically, this was the second time that neighborhood experienced a major fire in the last 10 years. As we look back on the devastation caused by these fires, my heart goes out to the families who lost their homes to either of these fires.
Now more than ever, public safety continues to be a priority for the City of Reno. The Reno Fire Department currently operates 17 fire companies out of 14 stations in the Biggest Little City. In 2020, the Department had 224 front-line fire personnel who provided more than 55,000 service responses. Thanks to a recent SAFER grant award, they’ll be growing that number to 244.
The Reno Fire Department continues to work hand in hand with our regional partners including the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, North Lake Tahoe Fire District, and the Sparks Fire Department, just to name a few, to support regional fire protection efforts. In addition, they are working closely with NV Energy on their Natural Disaster Protection Plan along with fuel mitigation programs designed to lessen the threat of wildfire to our community.
Wildfires present a continual threat to our northern Nevada community and something we must always be prepared for. Thankfully, our Reno family can rest assured knowing the Reno Fire Department will always be here to protect and serve our community as soon as they get the call
