The City of Reno’s Parks and Recreation Department is set to host a Community Day to mark the opening of a new playground at Miguel Ribera Park. The event is scheduled for Thursday, July 17, at 11 a.m., and will include brief remarks, complimentary paletas from Councilmember Martinez, the Rolling Recreation trailer, and an opportunity for families to explore the new playground. Both the public and media are welcome.

Miguel Ribera Park covers 19.48 acres and serves a community beyond the Neil Road area. The park’s previous play structures had reached the end of their service life and needed replacement.

In May 2023, the Reno City Council approved the 2023-24 U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Annual Action Plan. This plan allocated $2,010,659 in grants from the federal Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG), including $700,000 specifically for renovating Miguel Ribera Park.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate this incredible new playground at Miguel Ribera Park, a space built for our families and fueled by community investment,” said Ward 3 Councilmember Miguel Martinez. “We’re creating more accessible opportunities for play, connection, and joy right here in our neighborhoods.”

Early in 2024, the Parks and Recreation Department conducted outreach and released a community survey with various playground options. The public chose improvements that included new playground equipment, safety surfacing, drainage enhancements, and a new shade structure.

The newly installed playground equipment features structures designed for children aged 2-5 and another for those aged 5-12. It also includes a tuned drums structure, sensory play wall, neutron carousel, swings, and rubberized safety surfacing.
