The Reno Municipal Court will hold its 15th CAMO-RNO Veterans Treatment Court graduation on Tuesday, July 29 at 1:30 p.m. The event will recognize six new graduates of the program, which serves veterans and active-duty military personnel charged with misdemeanor crimes.
Hon. Judge Shelly T. O’Neill is scheduled to speak at the ceremony, highlighting the achievements of the graduates and the significance of the program. Since its inception in October 2018, CAMO-RNO has seen a total of 103 participants graduate from its ranks.
CAMO-RNO was first established with support from a U.S. Department of Justice grant and received an enhancement grant of $399,839 in October 2020. The program currently receives funding from the Administrative Office of the Courts through the Nevada Supreme Court as well as federal grant funding obtained in 2023 from the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
“Our Veterans have shown remarkable resilience and dedication throughout this program, and it’s an honor to witness their growth as they work toward a brighter future,” said Hon. Judge Shelly T. O’Neill. “I continue to be inspired by their commitment and am excited to see all they accomplish as they move forward in their journeys.”
The CAMO-RNO court offers specialized treatment for veterans facing misdemeanor charges. Participants are evaluated by a team before being accepted into the program, where they may qualify for diversion from prosecution. Those who complete all requirements can have their charges dismissed and may be eligible to have their records sealed under NRS 176A.295 (2).
In 2017, Nevada lawmakers passed legislation allowing veterans and military members access to treatment programs that offer diversion options and record sealing opportunities under Nevada Revised Statute 176A.280.
Additional legislation enables qualified defendants from other jurisdictions—particularly rural courts with limited resources—to participate in CAMO-RNO Veterans Court for mental health and substance abuse programs.
