Residents of Reno are invited to participate in a volunteer morning at the Municipal Rose Garden in Idlewild Park on Saturday, June 28, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event focuses on deadheading rose bushes, a practice that promotes continued flowering and healthy growth by removing faded or wilted blooms.
Ryan Sharrer, the City of Reno’s horticulturist, will lead the volunteers in this effort while playing classic tunes from a well-known jam band. Participants are encouraged to bring their own gloves, water, and maintain a positive attitude.
Ward 2 Councilmember Naomi Duerr expressed her support for the event: “We encourage residents to come out and spend a morning with us at the Reno Municipal Rose Garden. It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors, do a bit of gardening, and pick up helpful tips from the City’s own horticulturist—all while helping keep one of our most beautiful community spaces in full bloom.”
The Reno Municipal Rose Garden was established in 1958 under Fred Gallaway’s leadership and now covers one acre with over 1,000 roses across 200 varieties. Dedicated in Gallaway’s honor, it offers vibrant displays each year from June through October.
