Nevada opened its weekend softball series with a 10-4 victory over San Jose State on March 27 at Christina M. Hixson Park in Reno.

The win brings Nevada’s record to 23-11 overall and 5-2 in Mountain West play, while San Jose State falls to 10-20 and 2-5 in the conference. The game began with San Jose State scoring three runs in the first inning, but Nevada responded quickly.

Haylee Engelbrecht hit a two-run home run for Nevada in the bottom of the first, narrowing the gap to one run. In the second inning, Hannah Di Genova tied the game with her team-leading fourteenth home run of the season. Katelyn Wetteland then gave Nevada a lead by hitting a double that drove in three runs, making it 7-3.

Nevada continued to build its lead with RBIs from Madison Clark and Wetteland in the fifth inning. Anna Braukus added a solo home run in the sixth inning for additional insurance runs.

Pitcher Tess Bumiller started for Nevada, pitching three innings before Hailey McLean came on as relief. McLean threw four innings, struck out seven batters, allowed just five hits, and earned the win.

The two teams are scheduled to play again tomorrow at Christina M. Hixson Park.
