Nevada loses to UNLV in overtime thriller

Nevada lost to UNLV in overtime, 85-83, during a game at the Thomas & Mack Center on Saturday night.

Vaughn Weems led Nevada with a career-high 30 points and nine rebounds. Tayshawn Comer added 15 points and three rebounds, while Elijah Price contributed 10 points and five rebounds. Nevada shot 43 percent from the field, made half of their three-point attempts, and converted 72 percent of their free throws.

Defensively, six Nevada players each recorded a steal. Elijah Price had two blocks for the team. Nevada scored more points off turnovers (23-15) and had more bench points (21-12) than UNLV. However, UNLV outperformed Nevada in points in the paint (42-32) and second-chance points (14-13).

In the first half, both teams exchanged leads. Nevada’s largest lead was six points after a dunk by Vaughn Weems made it 18-12. The score was tied at 35 before Tayshawn Comer hit two free throws to give Nevada a 37-35 lead at halftime.

UNLV started strong in the second half with a seven-point advantage. Nevada responded with a five-point lead following a three-pointer by Weems. A late three-pointer by Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn of UNLV tied the game at 74, sending it into overtime.

During overtime, UNLV took an early lead at 83-80. Nevada tied it up at 83 before UNLV secured the win with a fast-break layup.

Nevada will play its next game on Tuesday, March 3 against Wyoming in Laramie.
