Despite an early home run from Jake Harvey, the Nevada Wolf Pack baseball team lost its season opener 11-3 to Ole Miss on Friday in Oxford, Mississippi.
Harvey started the game with a solo homer, but Nevada struggled to capitalize on opportunities throughout the contest. The Wolf Pack managed just one hit in ten chances with runners in scoring position. Jayce Dobie contributed by going 3-for-4 with a double, while Junhyuk Kwon was 2-for-2 with a double and two walks. Freshman Rominic Quiban also had two hits in his collegiate debut.
Ole Miss began aggressively at the plate. Dom Decker doubled to start the bottom of the first inning against Nevada starter Dominic Desch. After loading the bases, Tristan Bissetta cleared them with a double to right-center and later scored on a double play, giving Ole Miss four runs in the opening frame.
The Rebels extended their lead in the second inning with RBI singles from Will Furniss and Bissetta, making it 6-1. Desch pitched into the fourth inning before being replaced by Mahiro Tomita, who retired six straight batters after allowing a run on a groundout. Tomita finished his Nevada debut with 4.1 innings pitched and five strikeouts but allowed three runs in the eighth inning.
Desch was charged with seven runs on seven hits over his outing.
Ole Miss starter Hunter Elliott recovered after Harvey’s leadoff homer and kept Nevada scoreless for four more innings before leaving after five frames. In the sixth inning, Nevada threatened as Dobie and Sean Yamaguchi reached base, leading to two runs following errors by Rebel shortstop Brayden Randle.
Hudson Calhoun relieved Owen Kelly for Ole Miss and struck out five over 3.2 innings to earn the save.
Saturday’s second game has been rescheduled for 10 a.m. PT due to expected inclement weather.
