Trailing by two runs in the ninth inning and down to its final out, Nevada rallied to defeat Stanford 9-6 on Monday at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. The Wolf Pack scored five runs in the top of the ninth after Sam Kane reached base with an infield single. Nate Snakenborg followed with a single, and Jack Metcho reached on an error by Stanford’s first baseman Rintaro Sasaki.
Rominic Quiban tied the game with a single that drove in Kane and pinch-runner Noah Blythe. Junhyuk Kwon then hit a two-run double to put Nevada ahead, and Jayce Dobie added an RBI single—his fourth hit of the night—to extend the lead.
Andres Castro earned his first win of the season for Nevada after pitching a scoreless eighth and working out of trouble in the ninth by striking out JJ Moran and inducing a game-ending double play from Jimmy Nati. Toran O’Harran took the loss for Stanford.
This victory marked Nevada’s first over Stanford since May 14, 2002, and its first win at Sunken Diamond since 2000. The teams had not played each other since 2015.
Jayce Dobie started on the mound for Nevada, pitching four innings with four strikeouts while allowing five runs. At bat, Dobie went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Brock Ketelsen started for Stanford, giving up four runs over 4.2 innings with five strikeouts; he also went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double.
Quiban contributed offensively as well, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Metcho finished 1-for-3 with a double and scored three times.
Stanford built an early lead thanks to home runs from Luke Lavin, JJ Moran, and Rintaro Sasaki in the opening four innings. Lavin’s two-run homer opened scoring in the second inning; he later added an RBI groundout.
Nevada tied it at 2-2 in the third before Moran’s solo homer put Stanford back ahead. Sasaki extended Stanford’s lead with his two-run homer in the fourth inning.
A walk from Metcho helped spark another rally for Nevada in the fifth inning as Quiban doubled him home before scoring himself on Dobie’s double to left field, narrowing Stanford’s advantage to one run.
Nevada will return home to host Pacific in a three-game series beginning Friday at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
