Hillary Louise Schieve was born on October 12, 1970, in Reno, Nevada. She grew up in the city and attended Reno High School. She later studied at Arizona State University. Early in her career, she owned two clothing stores. In 2012, she was elected to the Reno City Council and served until 2014. That year, she ran for mayor as an independent. She won the election with 60.9% of the vote and was sworn in on November 12, 2014. Schieve received support from the Democratic Party before the election, although her office is nonpartisan. She worked on affordable housing, mental health services, and homelessness. She led efforts to revitalize the Midtown District of Reno. In 2016, she endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. Schieve was elected to a third term in 2022, completing the final term allowed under city limits. She served as the 81st president of the United States Conference of Mayors, the first independent to hold the position. Schieve became an advocate for organ donation after receiving a kidney from her sister. Her career included public controversies over city spending, symbolic actions, and proposed changes to mayoral powers, drawing attention locally and nationally. She remains connected to Reno through her work and community engagement.
